Who is liable for a slip in a grocery store?

Stores must use reasonable care to keep their premises safe for customers. In slip-and-fall cases, a key question is whether the store knew or should have known about the hazard in time to clean it up or warn customers. Evidence of how often employees inspected the aisle (“sweep logs”) and surveillance video often matter.

Others may also be responsible, such as a vendor stocking its own products, a cleaning contractor, or a property owner for parking lot hazards. In California, the comparative fault rule means your recovery may be reduced if you were partly at fault, but not necessarily barred.
